As a kid, there are many memories that are forever embedded into my mind. This time of year those memories are filled with memories of Christmas lights. When I was a kid, my parents, brother and I would all pack into the vehicle and just go driving with no real destination in mind. Our goal was to find the houses that had the best light displays. The thrill of finding that perfect house was sometimes hard to contain. One of my favorite places to see when I was a kid was a house on the outskirts of New Philadelphia. It was a place that we got to see often because it was on our way into town to go shopping. The amount of time that these people put into their display was amazing. The house sat up on a hill, and there was not a spot on the property that was not lit up. They had the house lit up, the driveway lined with lights, and several different light displays of Santa, snowmen, toy soldiers, reindeer, and even a sign made of lights that said Merry Christmas. It was a house that we would drive by slow and just admire. As a kid I can remember just being in awe of the lights and how much joy that brought to my family. I know in my heart that if that one house brought that much joy to my family, it had to touch several other families’ hearts in the same manner. This is part of my childhood that I want to share with my kids. In a society that is so fast paced and hectic, I feel that it is important for us as parents to take time out of our busy lives to do this for our kids. It is important for us to show our kids that it is good for the soul to slow down and enjoy the works of other people. The delight in our kids’ eyes when they see those beautiful light displays is heartwarming to say the least. For that moment, time slows down, our worries melt away, and pure joy fills our vehicle. What are some of your favorite holiday memories when you were a kid? What are some of the things you do with your kids to give them the same happiness you felt as a kid?
